Michael J. Baxter joined the firm in 2014 and ascended to partner in 2018. Michael originally hails from Stockton, Kansas, and in addition to working at the firm's office in Hays, he can be found at our office serving Rooks County and the surrounding area in Stockton.
While Michael practices in several areas of law, including real estate, probate and civil litigation, he also focuses on oil and gas law. Michael's representation in the oil and gas areas includes not only representation of operators, but also landowners, oil and gas suppliers and contractors, and mineral interest holders.
A graduate of Fort Hays State University (B.S. 2010) and the Washburn University School of Law, Michael was a member of the Board of Editors of the Washburn Law Journal and was Research Editor for Volume 53 of the Journal. Prior to joining the firm, Michael was a judicial clerk for the District Court of Shawnee County, Kansas (Third Judicial District) in Topeka. He was senior law clerk between 2013 and 2014.
Michael is admitted to practice in Kansas, Nebraska and Colorado. He is a member of the Kansas Bar Association, the Nebraska Bar Association, and the Ellis County Bar Association. His other professional associations include membership in the Kansas Independent Oil & Gas Association (KIOGA), the Wichita Association of Petroleum Landmen, and the Rocky Mountain Mineral Law Foundation. In addition, Michael currently serves on the Heartland Community Foundation Advisory Board.
Michael, wife Jackie, son Eli, and daughter Lily are home in Hays.
